Onslow County is more than just Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville’s main strip. Beneath the surface lies a treasure trove of hidden spots that only the most seasoned locals know about.

1. The Secret Inlet at Bear Island

Tucked behind the main beach at Hammocks Beach State Park, there’s a quiet inlet where the water stays calm even on the windiest days. Perfect for families with small children or anyone seeking solitude.

2. Yana’s Bakery on College Street

Skip the chain coffee shops and head to this family-run bakery that’s been serving fresh kolaches and Cuban coffee since 2003. The line forms early on Saturday mornings for a reason.

3. The Stump Sound Kayak Trail

While everyone heads to the New River, locals know that the Stump Sound paddle trail offers some of the most pristine marsh views in the entire county. Launch from the Holly Shelter Road access point.

4. Richlands Heritage Park

This often-overlooked park in Richlands features a restored 1800s farmstead, walking trails through longleaf pine forest, and one of the best sunset views you’ll find anywhere in eastern North Carolina.

5. Mike’s Farm During Fall

Everyone knows Mike’s Farm for the corn maze, but few visitors realize they serve a legendary family-style fried chicken dinner in their restored barn. Reservations fill up weeks in advance.

6. The Wilson Bay Oyster Beds

At low tide, the oyster beds near Wilson Bay become accessible on foot. Experienced shuckers bring their own knives and enjoy the freshest oysters you’ll ever taste — pulled straight from the creek.

7. Historic Swansboro Sunset Walk

Start at the Bicentennial Trail and walk along the waterfront just before sunset. The way the light hits the historic storefronts and reflects off the White Oak River is something you’ll never forget.

8. Camp Davis WWII Ruins

History buffs will love exploring the remnants of Camp Davis, a World War II anti-aircraft training base. The old concrete foundations and overgrown barracks offer a haunting glimpse into the past.

9. Hubert’s Country Store

This roadside stop on Highway 172 sells homemade sausage, local honey, and the kind of boiled peanuts that make transplants fall in love with the South.

10. The Onslow Pines Golf Course at Dawn

Even if you’re not a golfer, the sunrise over Onslow Pines is worth the early wake-up. The morning fog rolling off the fairways creates an almost dreamlike scene.

11. Queens Creek Fishing Pier Remnants

The old pier at Queens Creek is no longer operational, but the remaining pilings attract some of the best inshore fishing in the area. Red drum and flounder stack up here in the fall.

12. The New River Waterfront Park Night Sky

On clear nights, head to the park’s northern end. With minimal light pollution, it’s one of the best stargazing spots in the county.
